Iva Viana

Iva Viana descreve a evolução do seu atelier como uma surpresa. Quando regressou de França a Portugal, imaginava uma vida simples, quente e confortável no seu próprio estúdio, a criar as suas peças com tempo e calma. Mas o atelier e o negócio cresceram de forma inesperada. Hoje, conta com uma equipa de colaboradores, dentro e fora do estúdio, a ajudar na produção. Ser empresária e mãe, ao mesmo tempo que continua a criar, não era algo que antecipasse quando sonhava com um espaço só seu. Ainda hoje, perante tudo o que construiu, afirma: “Estou sempre à procura do início, de saber o que gosto de fazer — e nunca o esquecer.” 

Tal como as linhas fluidas das suas esculturas, o percurso de Iva — desde a juventude, os estudos, as viagens e os anos de trabalho — seguiu uma forte visão de progresso. Moveu-se sempre por curiosidade e pelo desejo de aprender, deixando-se guiar pelo interesse e pela vontade de descobrir. Não sabia exatamente o que seria ou o que viria a fazer, mas tinha a certeza do que não queria — e isso bastava para avançar em direção à liberdade criativa e ao crescimento. 

Nos primeiros anos, dois professores despertaram o seu olhar para o potencial de criar formas: um através do barro, de forma delicada e especial; o outro através da escultura em pedra. Ambos abriram caminho à certeza: “Sim, quero mesmo fazer isto.” Também os pais a incentivaram a seguir aquilo que queria ser, mesmo que isso fosse diferente do que alguém da família alguma vez fizera. 

Iva continuou os seus estudos de arte na Polónia durante a faculdade em Erasmus, experimentando diferentes meios escultóricos e multimédia. Também passou algum tempo durante a faculdade no Brasil e em Moçambique num intercâmbio artístico. Estes anos, ricos em viagens e encontros, permitiram-lhe uma imersão noutras culturas e a abertura de novas perspectivas, fundamentais para o que viria a construir mais tarde. Mais tarde, trabalhou numa empresa francesa onde aprendeu a arte do gesso decorativo - e apaixonou-se por este meio.

Atualmente, no seu ateliê nos arredores de Viana do Castelo, o trabalho de Iva traduz a profundidade dessas experiências e a linguagem íntima que desenvolveu com o material. As suas obras em gesso — sejam de pequena ou grande escala — nascem da aplicação e modelação do gesso húmido, depois esculpido e moldado quando seco, num processo rigoroso de adição e subtração, repetido ao longo dos anos e fora dos moldes tradicionais. O resultado impressiona pelo requinte e feminilidade das formas: linhas suaves, definidas por um subtil jogo de luz e sombra. O seu trabalho revela um conhecimento íntimo das possibilidades do gesso — e uma recusa clara em aceitar limitações à criatividade e à expressão. 

Iva atribui o crescimento do seu negócio não só ao trabalho árduo e à sorte, mas também à atenção dedicada à comunicação. Tem uma presença digital forte, com um site profissional e publicações diárias nas redes sociais, algo que considera essencial para se manter visível, relevante e atrair clientes. “Não me limitei a criar. Sabia que, se queria criar e ter um estúdio sustentável, tinha de ter pessoas a comprar as minhas peças. Por isso, é essencial que percebas isto da comunicação, que isto também faz parte do trabalho.”

Iva describes the evolution of her studio as a surprise. She imagined returning from France to Portugal to embrace the simple life, where she would come back and be warm and cozy in her own studio, producing her pieces. But the studio and business has continued to grow, to the point where she now has a team of collaborators, both in and out of the studio, assisting and making pieces. It was not something that she expected when she dreamt about having her own space, that life would become not just about creating, but also about being an entrepreneur, and then also a mother, at the same time. Even now when she sees how much the business has grown, she says, “I’m always looking for the beginning, knowing what I like to do and never forgetting it.”

Much like the fluid lines of her sculptures, the paths that Iva Viana has taken through her youth, her studies, the years of travel and work, and into her own studio follow a strong vision of moving forward. She followed her curiosity and her desire to always keep learning, always going where her interest led her. Iva now describes it as not always knowing exactly what it would be or become, but more of carving a path away from what she knew she didn’t want and towards creative freedom and growth.

In her early years, two professors exposed Iva to the possibilities of creating form, one via clay in a delicate and special way, and the other with sculptures from stone, both of whom opened her mind to thinking, “Yes, I really want to do this.” Her parents, too, encouraged her to be whatever she wanted to be, even if different from what anyone else in the family was doing.

Iva continued her art studies in Poland during college on Erasmus, experimenting with different sculptural media and multimedia. She also spent some time during college in Brazil and Mozambique on an artistic exchange. These years, rich in travel and encounters, allowed her to immerse herself in other cultures and open up new perspectives, fundamental to what she would later build. She later worked for a French company where she learned the art of decorative plaster - and fell in love with this medium.

These days in her studio outside Viana do Castelo, Iva’s work reveals how the depth of her experiences gives language to the passion and expression that she brings to the material. On both a small and grand scale, the works in plaster are created by applying and modeling wet plaster and then carving and shaping it further when it dries, over and over again, a process of addition and subtraction that is both painstaking and out of the norm, developed over many years of practice. 

It’s striking how refined and feminine the lines and shapes in her work appear, soft and yet defined with an interplay of light and shadow. They reveal the work of someone who has an intimate knowledge of the possibilities of the material, while denying limitations or restrictions to creativity and expression.

Iva credits the growth of her visibility and the success in her business not just to hard work and good luck, but also by paying a significant amount of time and attention to communication. She has a strong internet presence with a professional website, and she communicates through daily social media posts to stay visible and relevant, which has been important for building an audience and reaching future clients. She says, “I didn't just create. I knew that if I wanted to create and have a studio that was sustainable, I had to have people buying my pieces. So it's essential that you understand this about communication, that this is also part of the work.”
