BAB Store

 O conceito da BAB Store assenta na ética de “não deitar fora, mas reutilizar”. A importância que Sílvia Alves atribui às questões sociais, desde muito nova, inspirou-a a encontrar uma forma de aliar a sustentabilidade a soluções práticas e bonitas para o dia a dia, o que levou à criação do seu negócio, a Brain and Breath (BAB). Com a BAB, Sílvia Alves liga os seus ideais de consciência social ao seu trabalho como designer têxtil e de moda, utilizando materiais que sobram da produção têxtil (deadstock) e transformando-os em vestuário confortável e artigos práticos para o banho, cozinha e mesa. 

Tendo nascido no norte de Portugal, Sílvia Alves cresceu numa família onde as ideias eram partilhadas e debatidas, e onde se dava uma grande atenção à discussão dos temas do momento, incluindo a pobreza, a equidade e a igualdade das mulheres. Essa base foi determinante tanto para o seu foco ao longo da vida no bem comum, como para a coragem de seguir estudos e uma carreira em design de moda e têxtil, numa altura em que esse caminho ainda começava a abrir-se às mulheres, no Portugal de meados dos anos 80. 

Os seus estudos em design têxtil e de moda foram exigentes, com uma formação intensiva em técnica, fibras e engenharia necessária para compreender a componente industrial. A formação tinha uma “componente de design, uma componente criativa e os estudos técnicos... para perceber como o material seria produzido”. Isso deu origem à carreira na indústria da moda e têxtil, ao longo da qual Sílvia se focou na criação de designs simples, eficazes e funcionais. 

Enquanto criadora, Sílvia descreve o seu processo como uma espécie de caos belo, utilizando a luta entre forças internas e externas como a energia necessária para criar. Para ela, esta fase envolve fazer muitas coisas em simultâneo, como escrever, desenhar, pintar, bordar e cozinhar — formas de exprimir sentimentos enquanto explora diferentes meios de expressão. Diz: “A criatividade faz parte de mim. Preciso do caos para criar, e depois coloco tudo em ordem e sigo a partir daí."

 A BAB é um momento em que a técnica e a criatividade se fundem para um futuro sustentável. Para a Sílvia, um dos seus maiores desejos é que Portugal consiga afastar-se da atual paixão pela fast fashion e reencontrar as suas raízes na simplicidade bem feita. Sílvia tem notado que, de todos os seus clientes, a geração mais velha de mulheres portuguesas demonstra uma valorização especial pelo seu trabalho, reconhecendo a beleza, a utilidade e a praticidade das peças que podem ser usadas vezes sem conta. 

Ao criar uma coleção de peças bem feitas e bonitas, Sílvia espera incentivar as pessoas a comprarem menos, mas a escolherem com mais consciência e cuidado. Diz: “O meu objetivo é ajudar os portugueses a perceber que, se comprarem uma toalha de mesa ou um pano de loiça feitos cá em Portugal, com esta qualidade, vão tê-los durante muito tempo e podem fazer tudo com eles, tudo o que quiserem. É durável e funcional — e isso, para mim, é o verdadeiro significado da sustentabilidade.”

O projeto Criadoras foi inspirado, em parte, pelo encontro com Sílvia Alves no verão passado. Refletindo sobre a ideia do projeto, o desejo de Sílvia é que este ajude a inspirar as mulheres que querem fazer coisas. “Muitas mulheres querem fazer coisas. Eu fiz, e comecei tarde. Nunca pensei que estivesse preparada para o fazer, mas acabei por o fazer. Talvez [Criadoras] ajude as mulheres a encontrar coragem para iniciar o projeto em que têm andado a pensar.” 

The BAB Store concept is founded on the ethic of  “don’t throw it away but reuse.” The importance Sílvia Alves has placed on social issues since she was young inspired her to find a way to merge sustainablity with practical and beautiful solutions to everyday life, leading to the creation of her business, Brain and Breath (BAB). With BAB, Sílvia Alves matches her ideals of social consciousness with her work as a textile and fashion designer, by using material leftover from textile production (deadstock), and transforming it into comfortable clothing and practical goods for bath, kitchen and table. 

Raised in northern Portugal, Sílvia Alves grew up in a home where ideas were shared and talked about, and passionate attention was given to discussing issues of the day, including poverty, equity and equality for women. This foundation provided both her lifelong focus on social good, and the courage to pursue studies and a career in textile design and fashion design at a time when this was an emerging path for women to take in the mid-80s Portugal.  

Her study of textile and fashion design was rigorous, with intensive training in technique, fibers, and the engineering required to understand the machinery. Sylvia reflects that this education had a “design component, a creative component, and the technical studies...to know how the material would be produced.” This led to a long career in the fashion and textile industry, throughout which Sylvia focused on creating simple, effective and functional designs.

As a creator, Sílvia describes her process as a kind of beautiful chaos, using the struggle of forces without and and within as the necessary energetic struggle from which to create. For her this phase involves doing many things concurrently, including writing, drawing, painting, making embroideries, and cooking, as a way to express her feelings while actively exploring different outlets. She says, "Creativity is a part of me. I need chaos to create, and then I put all the things in order and I go from there."

BAB is where the technical and the creative align, moving towards a sustainable future. For Sílvia, one of her greatest wishes is for Portugal to find a way back from the current love of fast fashion to its roots of well-made simplicity. She observes that of all of her customers, the older generation of Portuguese women seem to particularly value what she’s doing, noticing the lovely, practical and useful things that can be used or worn over and over again. 

By creating a collection of well-crafted and beautiful items, Sílvia hopes that it will help people consider buying fewer things, but to also things that are more thoughtfully made. She says, “My objective is to help Portuguese people to understand that if they buy a tablecloth or a towel made here in Portugal, with this quality, they will have it for a long time and they can do everything with that, everything they want. It is durable and functional and that is the meaning of sustainability for me.”

The Criadoras project was inspired in part by meeting Sílvia Alves last summer. Reflecting on the idea for the project, Sílvia’s wish is that it helps inspire women who want to make things. “A lot of women want to make things. I did, and I started late. I never thought that I would be prepared to do this, but I finally did it. Maybe [Criadoras] will help women find the courage to start the project that they’ve been thinking about.”
